The mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, relocated 21 people experiencing homelessness who were living in makeshift encampments on public streets. This operation was a response to resident complaints about unsanitary conditions in areas such as Tlatelolco, Morelos, and Peralvillo. The action, carried out by brigades from the General Directorate of Social Development, aimed to reclaim public spaces while simultaneously connecting this population with institutional support options. During the interventions, the 21 individuals located were counseled on their situation and informed about available services, including potential placement in Mexico City government shelters. Authorities stated that the operation's focus was not just the removal of encampments but also providing social support options, comprehensive care, and accompaniment. The deployment began in the Morelos neighborhood, at the corner of Peñón and Santa Lucía, where an unoccupied encampment was dismantled. Subsequently, individuals were located at various points: Canal del Norte and Toltecas (one person), Ferrocarril Hidalgo and Canal del Norte (one person), Reforma Norte and Flores Magón in Tlatelolco (four people), González Bocanegra, near Paseo de la Reforma, in Peralvillo (two people), Paseo de la Reforma and Gorostiza (one person), Calzada de Guadalupe and Juventino Rosas (two people). As part of the operation, eight encampments were also dismantled, over 20 tons of trash and health and safety hazards were removed, such as mattresses, blankets, makeshift furniture, household utensils, metal structures, and sharp objects. Furthermore, communication was maintained with residents to strengthen citizen reporting in case of recurrence, in coordination with the Secretariat of Well-being. Cuauhtémoc authorities highlighted that these actions are part of a permanent strategy to reclaim public spaces, improve sanitary conditions, and provide comprehensive care for people experiencing homelessness in Mexico City. The local government assured it will continue these operations in different areas of the jurisdiction, prioritizing both urban order and social care.
